How to be on property TV: Get a fixer-upper

This is a legacy post from the blog which is now maintained as an archive within the Zoopla blog. Links have been preserved.

Are you digging out your workman’s boots and hard hat while channelling your inner Sarah Beeny? Then presenter, actor and property renovator Simon O’Brien wants to hear from you.

From Brookside and Fraggle Rock to My Derelict Dream Home, Simon O’Brien will front the new UKTV property TV show

O’Brien will be the front man of the aptly named TV show about finding your new property called My Derelict Dream Home due to air on UKTV in 2012.

As you’d imagine, transforming a wreck into your ultimate house  is likely to take time, which is why the producers need to find you now –  they’ll presumably be following you (and your muddy boots) around for the next year or so to capture all the drama of taking on an unloved property as a renovating challenge.

Plus, you’ll no doubt also get to hang (or at least meet) Simon O’Brien who made his name on Brookside back in the 80s. O’Brien has since featured on Grange Hill, been a radio and TV presenter and was even part of the short-lived, but much loved UK version of Fraggle Rock.

Properties with a partner: advice and experience

This is a legacy post from the blog which is now maintained as an archive within the Zoopla blog. Links have been preserved.

Love and property. You might not immediately put the two together, but a new show from the folks at Channel 4 are planning a new documentary that does just that.

The BAFTA award-winning team behind One Born Every Minute and 24 Hours in A&E  are working on a new seven part show about love and living together.

Details are a bit sparse at the moment, but what we do know is that the doco will delve into the lives of one couple who’re living together and feature a further six couples in love (of all ages):  from first kiss to final farewell. No doubt they’ll be laughs, tears and possibly even a few tense moments over some tricky DIY projects!

Best of all, Channel 4 are on the hunt for a couple to feature in the documentary. If you and your partner are on the cusp of moving in together, then it could be you. Email Anna Dangoor at or call 020 3465 9060 to find out more.

Vanilla Ice: Yo! Would you take property advice from this man?

This is a legacy post from the blog which is now maintained as an archive within the Zoopla blog. Links have been preserved. has been digging in the back of the wardrobe for our low-crotch trousers and baseball cap ever since we heard that property – at least in the US – was about to go all gangsta.

For those unaccustomed to early ‘90s rap speak, what we mean exactly is that Vanilla Ice (whose given name is Robert Matthew Van Winkle) has just launched his own property biz called, of course, Vanilla Ice Real Estate.

Van Winkle is already established as a bit of a homie type and has been hosting The Vanilla Ice Project – where he pimps out other people’s houses  – on America’s DIY network since 2009, so his entry into the online property world isn’t completely left field.

And it turns out his new website,, is a fairly pumpin’ operation that promises to teach aspiring property investors how to make paper (that’s money for the uninitiated) by buying and selling homes so they too can enjoy all the trappings of the rock star life – we’re talking Bentleys and bikini babes, of course.

Van Winkle explains it all on his website: “After my record breaking hip hop album, I got rich all over again in real estate,” he says. “I bought properties all across the country and resold them for millions in profits. It was some of the easiest money I ever made.

“Then I reinvested those profits into more deals, both residential and commercial, making money (and many mistakes) along the way. Although the camera is now spotlighting my skills as an investor on DIY’s The Vanilla Ice Project, the truth is, I have been investing for more than 16 years.”

Anyway, don’t take it from us, let the man himself guide you.

Calling first-time buyers: you could be on the telly

This is a legacy post from the blog which is now maintained as an archive within the Zoopla blog. Links have been preserved.

Here at FindaProperty we know a fair few people who’ve been down the muddy, rock strewn path of first-time buyer-dom and they all say the same thing: it’s a hard old slog.

Step forward then, any first timers out there who’d like a helping hand?A new television show is looking for first-time buyers who they can help find their dream first time buyer home. You can come from any part of the country and be interested in any type of house, the only requirement is that you need to have your finances already in place to proceed.

The as yet unnamed show will be broadcast on the Home channel sometime next year. You need to get your skates on if you want to be part of it though, as filming is due to start in May.

Email for your chance to be on the small screen.
